Rising out of deep forests, Katahdin in Baxter State Park is a significant beacon and the Heart of Piscataquis County, Maine. The mountain marks the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. Katahdin has a deeper place-based history and spiritual meaning connected to the four tribes of the Wabanaki Confederacy, particularly the Penobscot people.
This landscape photograph of Katahdin was taken from a remote location and reveals the elements of changing seasons in the forest, early morning autumn light and colors, clouds and coming winter weather. It was a tough go capturing this image. The afternoon before I drove deep into the woods then unloaded my canoe and camping gear for a long paddle on a winding river. I left my canoe in the woods and bushwacked 2 miles up to the base of the remote mountain. I set my tent in the snow, cooked dinner and got my cameras set for an early morning, pre-dawn ascent to capture this moment where so many elements that define Katahdin were coming together. I was not disappointed and I hope you enjoy this unique, dramatic view. .
